The New Media Consortium, the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), with the support of HP, produced the NMC Horizon Report > 2013 K-12 Edition, which was released in a special session at the NMC Summer Conference. This fifth edition in the annual K-12 series of the NMC Horizon Project examines emerging technologies for their potential impact on and use in teaching, learning, and creative inquiry within the environment of pre-college education.
Six emerging technologies are identified across three adoption horizons over the next one to five years, as well as key trends and challenges expected to continue over the same period, giving educators, school administrators, and practitioners a valuable guide for strategic technology planning.
The NMC Horizon Report > 2013 K-12 Edition recognizes cloud computing and mobile learning as technologies expected to enter mainstream use in the first horizon of one year or less. Learning analytics and open content are seen in the second horizon of two to three years; and 3D printing and virtual and remote laboratories emerged in the third horizon of four to five years.
The subject matter in this report was identified through a qualitative research process designed and conducted by the NMC that engages an international body of experts in education, technology, business, and other fields around a set of research questions designed to surface significant trends and challenges and to identify emerging technologies with a strong likelihood of adoption in pre-college education. The NMC Horizon Report > 2013 K-12 Edition details the areas in which these experts were in strong agreement.

The annual K-12-focused research project generates considerable interest every year when it is released and has built a global following. At a landmark session at the ISTE conference this year in San Antonio, the three principal investigators behind the report — NMC CEO Larry Johnson, CoSN CEO Keith R. Krueger, and ISTE Interim Chief Education Officer Leslie Conery — will discuss the report as well as the upcoming CoSN Horizon Report > 2013 K-12 Toolkit and their impact. The Toolkit, which will be available on June 23rd at cosn.org/horizon, is intended to be used by educators, policymakers, and other stakeholders to continue the conversation around the future of learning and the emerging technologies and issues discussed in the report.
