What do social networks look like across different learning environments? Why are social networks important for teaching and learning? What are the challenges in implementing and managing social network projects?
Join the NMC and our panel of Social Networks thought leaders on Wednesday, February 5 at 10am PT / 12pm CT/ 1pm ET (check for local time). This one-hour session will be held in the Google+ On Air platform and broadcasted live on YouTube. Participation is free for all attendees.
Today’s web users are prolific creators of content, and they upload photographs, audio, and video to cloud-based social networks such as Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, and many others by the billions. While the initial emphasis of social networks was placed on producing and uploading media to these popular sharing sites, as the notion of social media has evolved it has ultimately become more about the conversations started and relationships formed via this media. For educational institutions, social media enables two-way dialogues between students, prospective students, educators, and the institution that are less formal than with other media.

Steve Hargadon, Director of the Learning Revolution Project and Founder of Web 2.0 Labs
Steve Hargadon is the director of the Learning Revolution Project and Web 2.0 Labs, host of the Future of Education interview series, and founder and chair or co-chair of several worldwide virtual events, including the annual Global Education Conference, the Library 2.0 Conference, and the School Leadership Summit. Hargadon pioneered the use of social networking in education by creating the Classroom 2.0 social network in 2007, and supported and encouraged the development of thousands of other education networks, particularly for professional development. Hargadon blogs, speaks, and consults on educational technology, and his virtual and physical events build community and connections in education, with over 100,000 participants annually. He is co-host of the annual Edublog Awards, and has been the Emerging Technologies Chair for ISTE, the author of "Educational Networking: The Important Role Web 2.0 Will Play in Education," and was the recipient of the 2010 Technology in Learning Leadership Award (CUE). He has consulted for PBS, Intel, Ning, Blackboard, Microsoft, KnowledgeWorks Foundation, CoSN, MERLOT, the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Department of Education, Mightybell, and others on educational technology, specifically on social networking. Jared Bendis, Creative New Media Officer at Case Western Reserve University
Jared Bendis is the Creative New Media Officer for Case Western Reserve University’s Kelvin Smith Library. Jared serves as a senior expert for the campus, designing digital media strategies for content creation (and use) by researching and developing New Media applications for education and digital scholarship. Jared also holds adjunct appointments in the CWRU Art Studio, Music, and SAGES departments where he teaches courses on multimedia, instructional technology, and New Media Literacy. He also teaches Game Design at the Cleveland Institute of Art.
Shannon McClintock Miller, District Teacher Librarian at Van Meter Community School
Shannon McClintock Miller is the district teacher librarian at Van Meter Community School. She encourages her students to have a voice while learning, creating, collaborating, and connecting to others within their school and around the world. She is an educational consultant for Mackin Educational Resources. Shannon is the author of the award winning Van Meter Library Voice blog and enjoys writing for ISTE's Leading & Learning journal, various blogs, and other forums. She has had the opportunity to speak and consult in Iowa and around the country on education, librarianship, technology, social media, and making a difference in education and the lives of others.
Miriam Newcomer, Communications Associate at the San Francisco Museum
of Modern Art
Miriam Newcomer is the Communications Associate at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). She is broadening the museum’s traditional press relations to an integrated digital approach as SFMOMA prepares for its 2016 reopening after three years of expansion activities. Prior to joining SFMOMA, Miriam worked at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles where she created and managed all social media channels and increased the Hammer’s digital footprint from 20,000 followers to more than 200,000. She worked on in-depth digital campaigns to complement a range of exhibitions including: Llyn Foulkes, Richard Artschwager, A. Quincy Jones: Building for a Better Living, Now Dig This! Art and Black Los Angeles, and Made in L.A. 2012. Miriam has a BA with honors in film and art history from Loyola Marymount University.
Julene Reed, Director of Academic Technology at St. George’s Independent School
Julene Reed is an educator with twenty–two years of experience as a classroom teacher, technology integration specialist, and administrator. She is an Apple Distinguished Educator, Google Certified Teacher, and a member of the International Advisory Board for the Global Education Conference. Reed is the Director of Polar Bears International's Tundra Connections and a member of the advisory councils of both that organization and Dr. Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots. She delivers professional development, keynote presentations, and workshops internationally.
