For this edition of the NMC On the Horizon series, we're highlighting the 2014 NMC Summer Conference with a range of keynote, featured session, Five Minutes of Fame, Idea Lab, and preconference workshop presenters. The NMC Summer Conference is a one-of-a-kind event, attracting highly skilled professionals interested in the integration of emerging technologies into teaching, learning, and creative inquiry. NMC Summer Conference presenters are thought leaders within the education industry at colleges and universities, schools, museums, libraries, organizations, and companies. They are the people pushing the envelope to infuse innovation and creativity into learning experiences worldwide.
Meet the Panel
Panel Moderator: Holly Ludgate, Senior Director for Program Development, NMC
Dr. Holly Ludgate has been working in the fields of education, instructional design, technology, and online learning for the past 13 years. This passion for blending education with cutting-edge technology led her to pursue a doctoral degree from Pepperdine University in Educational Technology, where her research focused on gaming immersion in educational settings and fostering 21st century skills through Quest Atlantis. In 2007, Dr. Ludgate became Program Director at Full Sail University, where she launched the online Education Media Design and Technology Master’s degree program. Currently, she is the Senior Director for Program Development of the New Media Consortium (NMC), an international not-for-profit focused on sparking innovation and creativity in learning, where she manages the NMC Academy — the organization’s online learning initiative.
Samatha Becker, Senior Director of Communications, NMC
Samantha Adams Becker, Senior Director of Communications for the New Media Consortium, is the Director of the NMC Horizon Project and lead writer and researcher for the NMC Horizon Report series, which analyzes emerging technology uptake in various education sectors across the globe. She has an expertise in digital communications, with a special interest in e-publishing, social media, and online learning. Previous to the NMC, Samantha facilitated the digitization of books and periodicals for several of the world’s largest publishers and was the managing editor of a lifestyle magazine.
Nancy House, Senior Director, Member Services & Meeting Planner, NMC
Nancy House, CMP is the Senior Director, Member Services and Meeting Planner for the NMC. She has been with NMC since August 2002, and has over 30 years of management experience working with non-profit associations and higher education in the areas of operations, finance, project management, database management, meeting planning and member/donor services. She holds a designation as a Certified Meeting Professional (CMP). She also serves on the Meeting Professionals International Hill Country Chapter Board of Directors as the current Vice President of Communications, and incoming Vice President of Membership.
Glenn Katz, AutoDesk, Inc.
Featured Session, Breakout Session and Corporate Partner
Glenn Katz leads the Advocacy team in Mature Markets, working with educators and students to foster advocacy, evangelism, and thought leadership activities. He also manages the IDEA Studio -- Autodesk's unique residency program for students, faculty, and industry professionals who apply design-driven solutions to problems in business, society, and the environment.
Glenn has over 30 years of industry experience working at the intersection of AEC, education, and technology. He teaches at Stanford University, integrating BIM, systems integration, and sustainable design principles into the curriculum of the Architectural Design and Civil and Environmental Engineering programs and created the Autodesk BIM Curriculum for AEC. Glenn graduated from MIT with a focus on architecture and structural engineering, then completed the M.S. degree program in construction management at Stanford University.
Jason Ohler, Author, Futurist, Nowist
Opening Keynote and Breakout Session
Dr. Jason Ohler is a professor emeritus, speaker, writer, teacher, and cyber researcher. He helped created one of the earliest educational technology masters degrees for teachers in direct response to desktop computing in the classroom in the early 1980s, and has been helping to invent the future of technology and learning every since. He is a passionate promoter of “Art the Next R” and of combining innovation, creativity and digital know-how to help reinvigorate teaching and learning. He is also an enthusiastic champion of the need for students to learn how to use technology wisely and safely, with awareness and compassion, so they can become informed and productive citizens in a global digital society. He has won a number of awards for his work and is author of many books, articles, and online resources.
Julia Parra, Assistant Professor, New Mexico State University

Dr. Julia Parra is an assistant professor at New Mexico State University (NMSU) in the College of Education. She teaches and conducts research in the areas of professional and faculty development, online/blended teaching and learning, innovative learning design, educational learning technologies, emerging technologies, social media, and connectedness. Wendy Shapiro, Senior Academic Technology Officer, Case Western Reserve University

With over 20 years experience as leader, mentor, and educator, Dr. Wendy Shapiro, is dedicated to the field of education and technology. Dr. Shapiro serves as Senior Academic Technology Officer at Case Western Reserve University providing vision and strategic leadership developing sustainable projects in the area of enhanced learning environments, digital literacy, simulation, and blended and online learning. Dr. Shapiro currently sits on the Board of Directors of the New Media Consortium serving as Vice Chair. Shapiro is a published author, and has made numerous presentations in the area of academic technology and related topics throughout the United States.
