I’ve had a lot of interesting strands come together this past week as I have been pondering the next steps in our technological evolution. For the last 20 years or more we have been obsessed with transforming the real world into virtual worlds. Books have become eBooks. Magazines have become blogs. Cocktail parties have become Facebook. Meetings have become webinars, and so on. Now, however, I’m beginning to think more and more about technology bending in on itself. More >

In the past year of reading about and covering technology topics for the NMC Horizon Report series, there are a few key points I’ve gleaned about big data and analytics: 1) the science of data mining is making major waves in education, 2) it is a field of study that is growing with urgency — organizations with access to data are actively seeking people who can study, manipulate, and leverage it effectively, and 3) the fruit of this research may help me decide to become a Navy Seal or not.
